What is Assist in Travel Transport?
Making every trip possible—for everyone, everywhere
Assist in Travel Transport is an NDIS-funded service that helps people with disability travel safely, reliably, and confidently—whether it’s for health appointments, work, education, shopping, social outings, or community events.

If public transport isn’t suitable for you (due to mobility, health, or other reasons), support workers and adapted vehicles bridge the gap, providing direct or escorted transport and, where possible, skill-building for independent travel.

Types of NDIS Transport Assistance
  • Private transport: Accessible taxis, Uber, fully modified vans (exclusive use, door-to-door)
  • Community/group travel: Outings, group programs, shared rides to social, medical, or education events
  • Support worker-driven: Staff drives/accompanies participant, assists with access, safety, boarding
  • Public transport training: Supported “learning journeys,” confidence to use buses/trains/ trams independently (where safe)
  • Escorted/companion travel: Assistance navigating all steps of your trip
All modes are wheelchair/scooter/lift/ramp accessible—NDIS ensures transport matches your needs, so you never feel left out.
We help design your personal travel plan for routine or special trips.

Who Gets Assist in Travel Transport?
Eligibility: NDIS participants who, because of disability, cannot use public transport without assistance (physical, sensory, cognitive, or psychosocial barriers).

How to get support:
  • Have “Transport” support in your NDIS plan’s CORE or Capacity Building budget
  • Discuss at planning/review meeting; provide evidence of barriers and travel needs
  • Work with your provider/coordinator to create your travel plan: destinations, frequency, support method
  • Update your plan if your mobility or needs change
If unsure, your NDIS coordinator or LAC can help review your plan and funding levels.

Frequently Asked NDIS Transport Questions

Can I bring a support worker or friend with me?
Yes! You may have an escort (paid support worker or person of your choice) accompany you for confidence and safety—NDIS can fund their time.
Is training for buses, trams, and route planning provided?
Absolutely. Many participants start with supported “practice runs.” This builds skills, independence, and confidence [[2](https://networkofcare.com.au/assist-travel-transport-2)].
Are all vehicles wheelchair accessible?
Yes, every van/taxi is fully ramp- or lift-equipped, with driver training for mobility, vision, autism and cognitive access needs.
How do I change or add transport in my NDIS plan?
Speak to your LAC or support coordinator. You’ll need recent evidence (OT, GP, letter) showing you can’t use regular public transport unassisted. Plans can be updated at review or by request.
Can I use NDIS transport for social outings or shopping?
Yes—NDIS backing is for work, medical, social, community and daily living activities to support quality of life [[1](https://www.accessfoundation.com.au/blog/definitive-guide-of-ndis-transport-services)].
